More Than One Way To Lose Blood

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 9:05 PM
Friends - AJ, EmaPollo - AJ
Today, I went downtown and tried to donate blood by apheresis. For anyone who hasn't tried it, that's when a donor's blood is sorted by a machine to extract part of the blood, such as the platelets, and then send the rest back into the donor's body. Unfortunately, my veins weren't strong enough, so I had to donate whole blood instead.

It was kind of a disappointment, since my blood type's O+, which is the universal platelet donor. On the other hand, since [info]candyland once mentioned that the sorted blood feels weird going back into the body at a lower temperature, I'm kind of, um, glad. ^^* Is that wrong?

In other news, I found out I didn't get the job I interviewed for on Monday, and I was offered a job elsewhere that I can't accept, since they can't pay me enough to live on. I've got more time to find a job because of unemployment insurance, but still, I really hope this is over soon.

And in random geekdom news, I finally finished the first season of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. FREAKY, but oh so good. I've already been spoiled on certain key plot points (grrrrr), but now I'm watching the second season since I'm hooked--or cleavered.

**Reminder~!: The Facility ([info]a_facility), is about to host its first ever 4th Wall Meme on July 11-12, 2009!  Come in and get crazy-go-nuts!

An amazing RP I'm in, The Facility ([info]a_facility), is about to host its first ever 4th Wall Meme on July 11-12, 2009!

For anyone who doesn't know what a 4th Wall Meme is, it's where an RP community has a dressing room for the day--or in our case, a weekend. That means any characters within the game or outside it can come into a specially designated post and mingle! This is the chance to dust off any character journal from Maya Fey to Elizabeth Swann to a high school, alternate universe version of Wario and let them play.

FYI, in the RP I play Haibara Ai, live action!Tsukino Usagi, and an intern named Jenna Harding, so if you join our event I will squee.

Follow the link for more details. C'mon, you know you want to: A Facility OOC Comm: 4th Wall Meme

Despite how quizzes like these go, I'm not surprised.  Rika often goes with the flow, despite wanting a better ending for everyone.

Which Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Character are you?
Your Result: Rika

Insanely cute and everyone loves you. You have an exstensive vocabulary, and sometimes act way mature than your age. You want your friends to be happy, but everything always twists into an unhappy fairytale.

On a side note, I was watching some Higurashi and realized the Japanese voice of the police detective, Oishi, sounded awfully familiar.  It's Megure-keibu!  o.o

Hi there! It's been awhile, huh? I blame that on two things: being fired, and RP-ing.

(Yeah, the boss thought I wasn't "cheerful" enough. Fun, huh?)

Anyways, unemployment insurance makes everything better. That, and I watched this little gem of a 9th Conan OVA:

Wrung my heart to dry, and was kind of rushed, but it was an inventive plot idea! Go animators!

Yeah, yeah, it's from Movie 1, so it's not technically canon. But...

Here in NYC, the cherry blossoms are in bloom! (As are the apple blossoms, my personal favorite.) They'll all be gone soon, so I'm trying to drink in their loveliness while it lasts. Then it'll be rose season! 8D

In fact, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's Sakura Matsuri is next weekend. I'm not sure I'm going to go yet, since it's a crazy crowd--not including the cosplayers!--but I've never gone, so yeah. Here's a nice time-release YouTube vid of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's cherry blossoms!:

Bit of good news, by the way~ As of today, I've lost a total of 25 lbs. Woo hoo!

Went to Weight Watchers today, and it turns out this week I lost 5.8 lbs!  I've still got a long way to go of course, and the typical safe rate of weight loss is only 2 lbs per week, but I'm excited.  Shout out to all my brothers and sisters in the health struggle!

One and a Two and a Mardi Gras--Woo!

  • Feb. 24th, 2009 at 10:30 PM

I'm so gassed to have gone to choir practice tonight.  We had this great party after practice in the church basement.  One of the girls in choir made a slammin' jambalaya and king cake!  She even put the little baby in it, but I didn't find it.  ^^*

In a similar vein, I think I've found my nutritional soulmate: Weight Watchers!  Why am I so excited about this?  Well, I knew it was different because it was focused on developing permanent healthy habits of diet and exercise, but the meetings themselves are great.  They think of so much, like keeping your weigh-ins confidential and having each meeting be calm, supportive, and friendly.  For lack of a better phrase, I'm taking this on as what I'm "giving up" for Lent, but that's just the physical discipline part of it.

What I plan to embrace this Lent is the truth that God loves me.  That may seem simple or a no-brainer, but for me and just about everyone, that's the hardest truth of all.  I know by faith that God does infinitely more than like me well enough from afar, or spare me a glance from His throne on high, or toss me a good thing or two, but it's near impossible to know in my heart that He's personally invested in me at all.  To believe and recognize that God longs for me and wants me to be happy with Him forever sounds too good to be true.  Honestly, since I've been ditched by important people, I'm really struggling with that.  Now it's time to persevere!

Here's to new beginnings, staying within my Points range, and yummy king cake!  Happy Mardi Gras!

Okay, this is really random and I may be the last person who noticed this, but my city's pop station is playing "Live My Life" by T.I. and Rihanna.  Right now, I'm hearing it for the first time.

Since when is there a rap for "Numa Numa"?

This is Christmas, and What Have You Done?

It's been an uber-long time since I've updated my realjay, and this should've been announced a week ago, but--

MY SISTER HAD HER BABY!

So yeah, I'm an aunt (which I've been for nine months now, but anyway ^^) of the most adorable little boy in the world.  That's not just bias talking.  He's got this sweet little face, button nose, and perfect head of dark hair.  I can't wait to visit them today and hold that precious kid again.  My sis has been stressed--according to my best guess, for fear of "doing it wrong"--but she's healthy and doing well.

Also, I've been having ups and downs with my new job, but it's going well, too.  It's been a challenging experience, since I went from a giant city agency to a small private office.  Still, a couple of people have been very supportive and slowly but surely, I'm making it.  God has been very good this season by keeping me together through some tough crap.

Cut for Random Christmas Meditation )

Cut for PGSM Love! )

Now I just need to finish Shakugan no Shana Second--after we get home.  Merry Christmas~!

Today's the day~!  After over a month of preparations, we're finally throwing my sister her baby shower/Hallow'een party!

That's right, it's a baby shower with a Hallow'een theme--no cutesy decorations or games allowed!  My sister didn't want a baby shower at first, because she didn't want the pressure of being fussed over or playing traditional games, so we reworked it for her.  She's excited (she knows about it, of course), but she doesn't know the details.

I'm also eager to finally wear my flapper costume.  Good plus-size costumes are hard to come by!  Dad and I will match, since he's going as a 20s guy in a zoot suit--but I call him a gangster.  ^_^  We're going to have catered food, lots of sweets, and even karaoke.

The only downside is that my sis' mother-in-law, a lapsed Jewish woman, called in a "good witch" to do palm reading, tarot cards, and crap.  They looked at me like some kind of killjoy for saying she shouldn't have done it, but there's nothing else I could do.  As long as the woman doesn't launch into a speech about how Christians "stole" Hallow'een, I'll be alright.  Being the only practicing Catholic (since we're all baptized and confirmed) in my family does not have its perks.  I'll just vent by singing my latest musical obsession, Rihanna's "Disturbia"!

And here's a random prompt:

For anyone who's dressing up for Hallow'een, what are you going to wear?

WTF? - DC
Okay.  Just had a vivid dream.  This was too weird not to share:

I was Yagami Light (asdkfl!), rushing as fast as I could to paint macaroni and cheese on random boxes and plates.  Another girl in the mac n' cheese contest kept talking a lot, which made sense, since she was Hermoine Granger.

WHAT?

That's what I get from late night karaoke, Death Note, and White Castle.

That's the rundown.  ^_~  Hope everyone's doing well and enjoying their summer!

My Death Note Rules!

  • May. 12th, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Ran Hope - DC, Ran Forest - DC
My Death Note replica arrived in the mail today, and I was so excited to find the rules printed inside.  After reading a few, it dawned on me why most shinigami wouldn't bother dropping their Notes in the human world.  There are so many crazy rules!  Who wants to be bothered with that?

Then, in some lined pages were written character names, like Raye Penber, etc.  I thought that was cool, too.

But then came the remaining 80 or so blank pages that I could fill with whatever I pleased.  I've heard some stories about silly, emo teens who wrote classmates' names and were punished for writing death threats.  To discourage such notions and have a little fun, I used the first blank page for my rules.

---

+Notes to any human reading the previous pages:

1. The current owner of this Note is the human [my name].  As this Note is mere cosplay, anyone finding this Note should return it to her or else be called a thief.
2. There is no such thing as a true Death Note, save in the manga, anime, and live action series of that name.
3. There is no such thing as a death god, or shinigami in the language of the Japanese, but one Creator of heaven and earth and His creatures, including angels and human beings.
4. Anyone who writes a name in this Note with the desire to kill that human will not succeed, but will be answerable to the Creator for their malicious thoughts.
5. Anyone who wishes to make himself a god will be severely disappointed.
6. No law is greater than that of Charity, the ruler and exemplar of which is the Son of God, Jesus, who is called the Christ.
7. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Oh, the Pain

Yesterday, even though it was Mother's Day and a Sunday, I managed to see a doctor about my sore throat.  These past two weeks, I've been coughing and hacking like crazy, though the cold-like symptoms made it hard to tell if it was viral or bacterial.  I'd also been avoiding the doctor because, like many people on my income level, I have no insurance.  For the fail.

This doctor was a sweet lady, however, and gave me the diagnosis of strep throat.

Ooh, yay.

Then she proceeded to check my psoriasis and weight, giving me several prescriptions for all of this, and told me to gargle with not just salt water, but with salt, baking soda, and a few drops of iodine.  XP  Actually, it doesn't taste any different than plain salt, which is a plus.  She was also nice enough to give me her own iodine!  ^^  There was no way I'd find that in a corner bodega.

But then, for me to lose weight, she gave me a laundry list of things I can't eat, including bread and pizza.  Mind you, I live in the flippin' capital of all things pizza and pasta!  After looking it over, I thought, "What can I eat?"  T.T  There's no way I can do all this at once, not having been taught how to cook, or raised eating healthy meals at home, or living with anyone else for whom to cook.  Back when I was a teen, cooking involved a blue box with macaroni and powdered cheese.

Screw it.  For now, I'll just do my best, try not to worry, and work out when I can, usually during lunch hour.  Excuse me while I try to kill the bacteria infesting my throat.

EDIT: My dad, the sweetest guy ever, picked up my antibiotics just in time for the mailman to deliver my Death Note!  Yay!  Maybe I could name the strep Shirley and kill it!  XD
