Ack! So Nervous!

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 4:34 PM
Ran/Conan Fall - DC
After the crazy misadventure last weekend of my first Rocky Horror Picture Show--midnight showing on Hallow'een, baby!--I'm doing the polar opposite this weekend and visiting a convent to become reacquainted with the community. From Hell to Heaven? ...Call me Dante?

I'm nervous about giving a positive second impression, since I've visited these sisters before. At one point, I'm going to meet with the current superior; she was in Nigeria for many years, so I don't think we've met. But more than anything, I'm trusting in Providence and trying really, really hard to be myself. For anyone who knows me, that's a big challenge.

The convent's not that far from where I grew up, so there will be lots of fall leaves, crisp air, and silence. Please pray for me and/or send goodwill! Thanks!

Roleplay Like You Mean It!

  • Sep. 27th, 2009 at 2:06 PM
Shion Cheers! - H
Yesterday had several firsts as I attended the New York Anime Festival (NYAF) for the first time and, in a fit of curious boredom while waiting for my cousin to arrive, sauntered into the live action roleplay (LARP) room.  Butterflies flitted about and crashed in the pit of my stomach--or maybe that was just rumbling from the sweet aroma of funnel cake--but, lo and behold, there was an opening for Mouri Ran.

Let me tell you, live action roleplay took a lot more guts on my part than an LJ game.  Online, I could do Google research and revise each post to death.  And, oh yeah, I didn't have to act like Ran.  After an awkward moment where the one playing Shin'ichi/Kaitou Kid tried to help by asking, "Okay, let's say Ran meets Germany from Axis Powers Hetalia.  What do you do?"  I went ". . ." and blushed redder than a habanero.

To my pleasant surprise, however, the action was tightly controlled.  It was less about improv and more about the fight system played with lots and lots of Rock, Paper, Scissors.  Ran, for instance, could play the "Stupidly Rich Best Friend" card and use Sonoko's affluence to secure something pricey.  Best of all, Ran ended up swiping a jewel from L because "Shin'ichi" (the disguised Kaitou Kid) told her to before he passed out when Colonel Mustang lit a Zippo and exploded the police station.  Good times, good times!  If possible, I'll definitely do this again!

Question: Has anyone else tried LARP?  Have you also roleplayed online?  If so, what differences did you notice, and what's your favorite?

P.S. Weight loss update!  I've now officially lost 60 lbs!  That puts me near the halfway mark.  Woo hoo!

Not Quite Ready To Enjoy

Say What? - PGSM
After several months of futilely applying, interviewing, and not getting a job, I finally seem to be getting a job through a temp agency.  But info's been scarce, and the date--or even the time--when I'm supposed to start is uncertain, even though I used to work there before.  Because of this and the bad taste left in my mouth from my last position, I can't celebrate!  When my sister wanted to raise a toast, I told her flat out "no".  I haven't even told my dad yet, and I don't want to so he won't make a fuss.

Of course, once I'm given a time and date to report, I'll let Dad know and ask to go out to celebrate after my first day.  ^^

Has anyone else been in that type of situation where you should logically celebrate something good, but can't because you're jaded or uncertain?  Hope it's not too weird!

Random Con Skit Idea That Won't Die

  • Aug. 6th, 2009 at 10:26 PM
What The? - O
Friends, Romans, otaku--lend me your eyes! And ears! And leeks!

I've got a zany idea for a con skit, but there's no way to execute it myself. It would require a con attendee to cosplay and coordinate a skit with a medium to huge group of other cosplayers. Does anyone remember the Ievan Polkka by Loituma? The one immortalized on YouTube?:

Well, I thought it would be funny as a panfandom skit. It could start out with Bleach characters reenacting the scene with the leek spin, and then have characters from other fandoms enter; after getting weirded out, they would join in the spinning with whatever they have. Sora spins his keyblade, Winry her wrench, Aeris her staff, etc. etc. etc. Ends up as THE ULTIMATE LEEK SPIN.

If a background screen's provided, an optional addition would be to use the original Bleach background with curly q's. ^_^ Objects could be replaced with actual leeks or batons, too.

Someone, please pick this up! If not, do you know of an LJ comm about con skits that might be interested? I did a search and found nothing. This is just a dorky wish of mine~

More Than One Way To Lose Blood

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 9:05 PM
Ran/Conan Fall - DC
Today, I went downtown and tried to donate blood by apheresis. For anyone who hasn't tried it, that's when a donor's blood is sorted by a machine to extract part of the blood, such as the platelets, and then send the rest back into the donor's body. Unfortunately, my veins weren't strong enough, so I had to donate whole blood instead.

It was kind of a disappointment, since my blood type's O+, which is the universal platelet donor. On the other hand, since [info]candyland once mentioned that the sorted blood feels weird going back into the body at a lower temperature, I'm kind of, um, glad. ^^* Is that wrong?

In other news, I found out I didn't get the job I interviewed for on Monday, and I was offered a job elsewhere that I can't accept, since they can't pay me enough to live on. I've got more time to find a job because of unemployment insurance, but still, I really hope this is over soon.

And in random geekdom news, I finally finished the first season of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. FREAKY, but oh so good. I've already been spoiled on certain key plot points (grrrrr), but now I'm watching the second season since I'm hooked--or cleavered.

**Reminder~!: The Facility ([info]a_facility), is about to host its first ever 4th Wall Meme on July 11-12, 2009!  Come in and get crazy-go-nuts!

Calling All Roleplayers!

An amazing RP I'm in, The Facility ([info]a_facility), is about to host its first ever 4th Wall Meme on July 11-12, 2009!

For anyone who doesn't know what a 4th Wall Meme is, it's where an RP community has a dressing room for the day--or in our case, a weekend. That means any characters within the game or outside it can come into a specially designated post and mingle! This is the chance to dust off any character journal from Maya Fey to Elizabeth Swann to a high school, alternate universe version of Wario and let them play.

FYI, in the RP I play Haibara Ai, live action!Tsukino Usagi, and an intern named Jenna Harding, so if you join our event I will squee.

Follow the link for more details. C'mon, you know you want to: A Facility OOC Comm: 4th Wall Meme

Despite how quizzes like these go, I'm not surprised.  Rika often goes with the flow, despite wanting a better ending for everyone.

Which Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Character are you?
Your Result: Rika

Insanely cute and everyone loves you. You have an exstensive vocabulary, and sometimes act way mature than your age. You want your friends to be happy, but everything always twists into an unhappy fairytale.

On a side note, I was watching some Higurashi and realized the Japanese voice of the police detective, Oishi, sounded awfully familiar.  It's Megure-keibu!  o.o

Hi there! It's been awhile, huh? I blame that on two things: being fired, and RP-ing.

(Yeah, the boss thought I wasn't "cheerful" enough. Fun, huh?)

Anyways, unemployment insurance makes everything better. That, and I watched this little gem of a 9th Conan OVA:

Wrung my heart to dry, and was kind of rushed, but it was an inventive plot idea! Go animators!

Yeah, yeah, it's from Movie 1, so it's not technically canon. But...

Here in NYC, the cherry blossoms are in bloom! (As are the apple blossoms, my personal favorite.) They'll all be gone soon, so I'm trying to drink in their loveliness while it lasts. Then it'll be rose season! 8D

In fact, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's Sakura Matsuri is next weekend. I'm not sure I'm going to go yet, since it's a crazy crowd--not including the cosplayers!--but I've never gone, so yeah. Here's a nice time-release YouTube vid of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's cherry blossoms!:

Bit of good news, by the way~ As of today, I've lost a total of 25 lbs. Woo hoo!

Went to Weight Watchers today, and it turns out this week I lost 5.8 lbs!  I've still got a long way to go of course, and the typical safe rate of weight loss is only 2 lbs per week, but I'm excited.  Shout out to all my brothers and sisters in the health struggle!

One and a Two and a Mardi Gras--Woo!

  • Feb. 24th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Sonoko Squee! - DC

I'm so gassed to have gone to choir practice tonight.  We had this great party after practice in the church basement.  One of the girls in choir made a slammin' jambalaya and king cake!  She even put the little baby in it, but I didn't find it.  ^^*

In a similar vein, I think I've found my nutritional soulmate: Weight Watchers!  Why am I so excited about this?  Well, I knew it was different because it was focused on developing permanent healthy habits of diet and exercise, but the meetings themselves are great.  They think of so much, like keeping your weigh-ins confidential and having each meeting be calm, supportive, and friendly.  For lack of a better phrase, I'm taking this on as what I'm "giving up" for Lent, but that's just the physical discipline part of it.

What I plan to embrace this Lent is the truth that God loves me.  That may seem simple or a no-brainer, but for me and just about everyone, that's the hardest truth of all.  I know by faith that God does infinitely more than like me well enough from afar, or spare me a glance from His throne on high, or toss me a good thing or two, but it's near impossible to know in my heart that He's personally invested in me at all.  To believe and recognize that God longs for me and wants me to be happy with Him forever sounds too good to be true.  Honestly, since I've been ditched by important people, I'm really struggling with that.  Now it's time to persevere!

Here's to new beginnings, staying within my Points range, and yummy king cake!  Happy Mardi Gras!

Okay, this is really random and I may be the last person who noticed this, but my city's pop station is playing "Live My Life" by T.I. and Rihanna.  Right now, I'm hearing it for the first time.

Since when is there a rap for "Numa Numa"?

This is Christmas, and What Have You Done?

  • Dec. 25th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Ran/Conan Fall - DC

It's been an uber-long time since I've updated my realjay, and this should've been announced a week ago, but--

MY SISTER HAD HER BABY!

So yeah, I'm an aunt (which I've been for nine months now, but anyway ^^) of the most adorable little boy in the world.  That's not just bias talking.  He's got this sweet little face, button nose, and perfect head of dark hair.  I can't wait to visit them today and hold that precious kid again.  My sis has been stressed--according to my best guess, for fear of "doing it wrong"--but she's healthy and doing well.

Also, I've been having ups and downs with my new job, but it's going well, too.  It's been a challenging experience, since I went from a giant city agency to a small private office.  Still, a couple of people have been very supportive and slowly but surely, I'm making it.  God has been very good this season by keeping me together through some tough crap.

Cut for Random Christmas Meditation )

Cut for PGSM Love! )

Now I just need to finish Shakugan no Shana Second--after we get home.  Merry Christmas~!
Ran/Conan Fall - DC
Today's the day~!  After over a month of preparations, we're finally throwing my sister her baby shower/Hallow'een party!

That's right, it's a baby shower with a Hallow'een theme--no cutesy decorations or games allowed!  My sister didn't want a baby shower at first, because she didn't want the pressure of being fussed over or playing traditional games, so we reworked it for her.  She's excited (she knows about it, of course), but she doesn't know the details.

I'm also eager to finally wear my flapper costume.  Good plus-size costumes are hard to come by!  Dad and I will match, since he's going as a 20s guy in a zoot suit--but I call him a gangster.  ^_^  We're going to have catered food, lots of sweets, and even karaoke.

The only downside is that my sis' mother-in-law, a lapsed Jewish woman, called in a "good witch" to do palm reading, tarot cards, and crap.  They looked at me like some kind of killjoy for saying she shouldn't have done it, but there's nothing else I could do.  As long as the woman doesn't launch into a speech about how Christians "stole" Hallow'een, I'll be alright.  Being the only practicing Catholic (since we're all baptized and confirmed) in my family does not have its perks.  I'll just vent by singing my latest musical obsession, Rihanna's "Disturbia"!

And here's a random prompt:

For anyone who's dressing up for Hallow'een, what are you going to wear?

WTF? - DC
Okay.  Just had a vivid dream.  This was too weird not to share:

I was Yagami Light (asdkfl!), rushing as fast as I could to paint macaroni and cheese on random boxes and plates.  Another girl in the mac n' cheese contest kept talking a lot, which made sense, since she was Hermoine Granger.

WHAT?

That's what I get from late night karaoke, Death Note, and White Castle.
